Practical continuity
How to keep ChatGPT context across new chats
The goal is not to paste your whole history into every new conversation. The goal is to carry forward the parts that actually control the work.
Use a simple project handoff
Before leaving an important project, preserve five things in a place you control: the current purpose, settled decisions, the files that matter, what changed most recently, and the next intended action.
That record can start as a folder with a project brief, decisions, notes, and source material. It is already better than trusting a single chat thread to carry the whole job forever.
1. State the purpose
What is this project trying to accomplish? Keep it short enough that a new chat can orient quickly.
2. Preserve decisions
Record what was settled and why. A decision that cannot be found will eventually be debated again.
3. Keep the sources
Save the actual files, notes, images, references, and drafts with the project—not only a summary of them.
4. Mark current status
Write down where work stopped, what is incomplete, and what changed since the last clean checkpoint.
5. Name the next step
Give tomorrow's conversation a clear first move instead of a blank page and a vague recollection.
6. Orient, then retrieve
Start the new chat with the brief. Pull in exact decisions or files only when the task calls for them.
Where ChatGPT Projects fit
ChatGPT Projects are useful for keeping related chats, instructions, and reference material together. Use them when the work naturally lives inside ChatGPT and the available project context is enough for the job.
If your work also has a local file structure, evolving source material, physical deliverables, or a need for visible custody and boundaries, keep an external project record too. That record remains useful even when you change chats, tools, or AI providers.
How Flight Command makes this repeatable
Flight Command keeps the handoff and the source material in the same local Workshop. A new ChatGPT conversation can identify the selected project, retrieve recorded continuity, search the project's real files, and continue from the work instead of relying on a giant pasted prompt.
